I believe this to be a very old piece of pottery. It was purchased at the estate sale of a very old woman who had very old antiques of the best quality. This is a Bennington-style or Rockingham-style dog, however I am not an expert on either Bennington or Rockingham so if anyone can identify this piece, I will post your info, and please note that I am not calling this either Bennington or Rockingham--again, I am not an expert. This is, however, an exceptional piece of glazed pottery. As you can see from the bottom, the clay was forced into a mold and you can clearly see the inner workings of the piece, which to me makes it more interesting than a piece with a closed base. This open bottom is another reason I believe this piece to be old--the manner in which it is made. The doggie is 7" tall and has some weight to it, so it could have been a door-stop or book-end. The clay color is a cream color which is why I think it is yelloware, but it may be considered stoneware. The piece is in excellent condition--I can find no chips in it. It has some light scuffing along the front and back of the base, which again leads me to believe it is old and was used as perhaps a bookend or doorstop. It has some original--and I stress original--clay cracks that are UNDER the glaze and are completely original to the piece--you can see one in the close-up. read more
