GRAMBITA* Glass Roman Antique Mali Bead Islamic Trade Ancient 10 mm barrel. Slightly translucent blue with red/yellow zones. NOT POWDER GLASS! Another obscure Middle Eastern type that's also not Venetian. Slightly weathered, but it's all here! Acquired personally in Mali or Mauritania. *This freshly-coined nickname, "grambita", should cover most of the common folktale buzzwords that have come down to us for this thinly researched segment of the bead-collecting hobby. A "grambita" is any glass bead that's usually too old to be European, that's found in Mali or other Saharan parts of West Africa, that's apparently from any of several purported bead-making centers of the Middle East, and that's probably NOT Roman, NOT Ancient, and NOT Islamic. It's a "trade" bead to the extent that it found its way to West Africa and the Medieval kingdoms via the age-old trans-Saharan "trade" routes. Check King Zongo's list for more famous "trade" beads.Combining lots saves on postage. Certain international buyers requesting additional postal services, such as Global Express Guaranteed Priority (with tracking number), will receive a revised invoice. It's a risky and dangerous world. Peace be with you! Buy beads, not stories.
