Zuni Native American carver Davey COOEYATE has carved here a wonderful figural fetish from a beautiful piece of pipestone. Pipestone, also known as catlinite, is the sacred red clay stone that Native Americans use for making prayer and ceremonial pipes. It is found in only a few places in the world. The best quality pipestone comes from Minnesota, from the Pipestone National Monument quarries, which have been used by Native carvers for centuries. It ranges in color from pale pink to brick red or blood red, and normally has small lighter spots or streaks, called "stars", scattered throughout it. This bear is a great example of the wonderful pieces that are carved from this beautiful stone. The pipestone is a wonderful deep brick red color. This is a massive piece, with the bear standing almost 2 1/2 inches tall . features a turquoise fish on his mouth and inlaid turquoise eyes.
