Mattel Barbie Friends & Family Dolls - Tutti
Mattel Barbie Friends & Family Dolls - Tutti - Description
Tutti is a toy doll of a toddler-age girl made by the Mattel toy company. Tutti and her twin Todd were Barbie's younger sister and brother. Tutti was one of the smallest friends and family dolls in the Barbie brand, measuring just over six inches tall. Mattel often sold Tutti in sets with Todd in the 1960s. In the 1990s, Mattel sold her as a flower girl in a Barbie wedding set.
Mattel Barbie Friends & Family Dolls - Tutti - History
The Barbie doll was a hit for Mattel when the company first introduced her in the late 1950s, and Mattel rapidly expanded the Barbie doll line by adding new dolls like baby sister Tutti. Some of the first Barbie family and friends dolls were Ken, Skipper, Allan, and Francie. While these dolls were around the same size as Barbie, both Tutti and Todd were much smaller because they were marketed as Barbie’s younger twin sister and brother.
Mattel debuted Tutti in 1966 as one of Barbie’s twin siblings Tutti and Todd. Barbie’s founder, Ruth Handler, named the male twin after her son, but the Barbie design department at Mattel gave Tutti her name. Mattel sold various Tutti dolls this first year, some wearing a white and red checkered gingham outfit or a pink dress. The company sold Tutti in both America and Europe. Mattel sold many Tutti play sets, such as Swing-A-Ling Tutti, Sundae Treat, Walkin’ My Dolly, and Me and My Dog. These sets came with fun accessories such as ice cream sundaes, a baby stroller, or a stuffed dog. Mattel stopped selling Tutti dolls in the United States after 1976 because the company found that the dolls posed a safety hazard with their bendable limbs, which tended to break off with frequent bending. However, Tutti returned in 1991 as a flower girl for the Wedding Party Midge Set.

Mattel Barbie Friends & Family Dolls - Tutti - Identification & Value
Tutti is identified by her small stature. Both Tutti and Todd are just over six inches tall. They have slightly thicker, babyish bodies and oversized heads. Tutti and Todd have impish smiles denoting their playful natures as Barbie’s young siblings. Tutti has rooted hair past her shoulders in blonde, brunette, or titian, often topped off with bangs. While Barbie dolls from this era were jointed at the limbs and neck, Tutti was only jointed at the neck. Her limbs moved by virtue of their soft vinyl material with internal wires, allowing her to be posed in different positions. Mattel sold some of the first Tutti dolls individually in a box with a few accessories. Other Tutti dolls were sold in larger packages with accessories or furniture, like the bed that was sold in the Night-Night, Sleep Tight! and Melody in Pink Tutti, which came with a piano and stool. Tutti dolls in each of these sets generally have different hairstyles.
