Known around the world as "the city of pottery," Talavera has had pottery dated all the way back to the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, Talavera has been influenced by several cultures. When the Arabs moved into Spain, they brought with them new techniques, including a new kind of oven to bake the pottery. Then, in the 15th century, new styles were brought from Holland by Jan Floris, who opened a factory in Talavera, which started the pottery tradition in the city. Ceramics from Talavera have been used in fountains and building tiles, as well as plates and vases. During the 16th century, the Spaniards brought Talavera pottery to the new world, and Mexico is still producing their form of it today. (The Mexican pottery is known as Talavera Poblana, to distinquish it from the Spanish pottery.
