You are bidding on a framed original panoramic photo of the 10th US Cavalry at Pine Camp NY in 1910.The photo was taken by L.M. Hermance of Pokeepsie N.Y. and measures 44-1/4" X 7-1/2" including the frame.One distinguished soldier who's more than likely in this photograph is Charles Young He was the 3rd black graduate of West Point. He saw action in both the Spanish American War and the Punitive Expedition (1916) and he advanced to be Colonel. He was denied combat command in WWII, so to show his fitness, he rode a horse from Xavier, OH to Washington DC. About the 10th US Cavalry: Following the end of the Civil War, the United States began its great expansion westward. On June 28, 1866, Congress authorized the creation of six regiments of "Negro" troops, two cavalry and four infantry, to protect the settlers and aid in the opening of the West. The 10th U.S. Cavalry, activated at Fort Leavenworth, KS, on July 28, 1866 under the command of Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson. The regiment was composed of Negro volunteers, freed slaves and some Civil War veterans. D Troop was constituted as Company D, 10th Cavalry and organized 1 June 1867. (Cavalry units were not designated as troops until 1883). In July 1867, the Troop moved to Fort Riley, KS, to take up its first duty assignment patrolling the Kansas and Pacific Railroad.
