WRITTEN BY A PRIVATE WHO WAS WOUNDED IN THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG. 4 pages, 5 x 8, in ink, on patriotic stationary with vignette of the United States Capitol. Written by Private Charles A. Fiske. "Headquarters 11 Regt., M.[asachusetts] V.[olunteers], Camp Baker, Co. K, St. Charles County, Md., Nov. 29th, 1861. I hope you will not think that I have neglected you or forgotten my old schoolmate. By no means, it is not so. We are both very well and in good spirits. This place is 50 miles south east of Washington and we are within 3 miles of the Rebel batteries that lie on the opposite side of the Potomac and we have plenty of picket duty to perform. The Rebels have a force of 50,000 men on the other side between here and Manassas Junction. We have some prospect of going into winter quarters here and Co. D has built a log barracks 60 feet long with a fire place at each end, one to cook by and the other to warm their shins by. They went and took a lot of Secesh boards without asking leave to. They are going to have bunks for 2 persons, 3 tiers the whole length, the same as our quarters were at Camp Cameron last June. We gained a brilliant victory at Beaufort, N. Carolina. I am longing to see another skirmish. It would stir up my blood some I tell you. I never was in better health in my life. I weigh 163 lbs. and I am 5 ft. 10 in. height. read more
