MERIDEN 13" FOOTED PICKLE CASTOR WITH CRANBERRY QUILT INSERT Most pickle castors are ornate in the Victorian manner and this one is exceptional. This is one of the nicest castor frames we have had standing 13" tall on decorated feet and raised base. It has floral fretwork on the sides and across the top of the bail. These designs encompass: gentle swirls, leaves and even a few small pickles. A geometric pattern surrounding tiny birds in flight encircles the base. The diamond pattern cranberry color insert is in excellent condition and fits nicely into the castor. This is covered by a tiered silverplate lid with fancy finial. The silverplate finish is probably original. It has the soft rich patina of good antique silverplate from the 1880's. T are some darker areas, notably down inside the base w the jar rests. T is a hook on one side for tongs and a choice of a prong for fork on the other side which is what is used on this particular castor. This is a great Victorian Pickle castor. The castor is marked Meriden Silver Plate Co. No.685
