L'histoire de Thucydide Athenie[n], de la guerre qui fut entre les Peloponesiens & Athenie[n]s, Tra[n]slatée en la[n]gue Francoyse par feu Meßire Claude de Seyssel lors Evesque de Marseile, & depuis Archevesque de Turin.. A rare early French translation by Claude de Seyssel (1450-1520) of Thucydides' classic work on the Pelopponesian War, still routinely assigned in college classes on international relations, and frequently cited by international relations scholars. No other copies of this same edition are currently offered for sale, though a little while ago a bookseller was offering a splendidly bound copy for the equally splendid sum of $20,000! Also worth noting is that this volume was printed for Claude Garamond (1480-1561), a famous Parisian type font designer and maker. He allegedly trained under Geoffroy Tory. His typefaces were used by the Estiennes, as well as the Colines, Plantin and Bodoni printing houses. His influence continues unabated today.
