Full court proceedings for the 14 most serious trials between 1701 and Feb 1709, with two additional trials from 1716 and 1636. Perhaps the two most important trials are that between Majesty King Charles the First and John Hambden which catalysed the English Civil War and that of Richard Hathaway who was tried for wrongfully accusing another of WitchcraftCondition: The book has been rebound, with the original leather boards re-used. As a result the binding is as new. The first two pages have slightly frayed edges, but generally the pages are in great shape. The first twenty or so pages have a stain (see photos) which are probably from a damp incident in the long distant past. There are faded sepia notes on the rear end paper. Hans William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland, Baron Bentinck of Diepenheim and Schoonheten, was a Dutch and English nobleman who became in an early stage the favourite of William, Prince of Orange the future King of England. For his share in drawing up the partition treaties he was impeached in 1701, but the case against him did not proceed. He was occasionally employed on public business under Queen Anne until his death at his residence, Bulstrode Park in Buckinghamshire. Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford, Admiral of the Fleet PC was the First Lord of the Admiralty under King William III. John Lord Somers was an English Whig jurist and statesman. Somers first came to national attention in the trial of the Seven Bishops where he was on the defence counsel. He published tracts on political topics such as the succession to the crown, where he elaborated his Whig principles in support of the Exclusionists. He played a leading part in shaping the Revolution settlement. He was Lord High Chancellor of England under King William III and was a chief architect of the union between England and Scotland achieved in 1707 and the Protestant succession achieved in 1714. He was a leading Whig during the twenty-five years after 1688.In 1701 he was impeached by the Commons on account of the part he had taken in the negotiations relating to the Partition Treaty in 1698, and defended himself most ably before the house, answering the charges seriatim. The impeachment was voted and sent up to the Lords, but was there dismissed. Charles Montagu 1st Earl of Halifax was born in Horton, Northamptonshire, the son of George Montagu, fifth son of 1st Earl of Manchester. He was educated first in the country, and then at Westminster, where he was chosen as a Queen's Scholar in 1677. In 1698, having been appointed to the first Commission of the Treasury, he was also one of the regency in the King's absence. The next year he was made Auditor of the Exchequer, and the year after created Baron Halifax, of Halifax in the County of Yorkshire, with remainder to his nephew George Montagu. His impeachment by the Commons failed, when the Articles were dismissed by the House of Lords.
