Bellin Date and Place: 1747; Paris, “ Chez Didot......” Source: Histoire Generale des Voyages ou Nouvelle Collection de Toutes des Relation de Voyages” Dimensions: 8 by 12 inches (20 x 30 cm) on a larger sheet. BW Copperplate Engraving Condition: VG+ Description: L’Abbe Prevost’s “Histoire des Voyages” was a monumental undertaking that stretched to 20 volumes, the last being done in 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution. Begun by Prevost in 1746, the work was continued by others after his death 1763. One historian describes the work as: “An important and scarce collection which includes accounts of all the Principal Early Australian voyages, as well as account of the discovery of Australia by the Dutch, early voyages to New Guinea and the Palau Islands, and Roggeveen’s voyage to Terres Australes, African voyages including the early Portuguese and English voyages to West Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, with a general account of the Dutch at the Cape. ”. This map is from Volume “IV” and was done by Jacques Nicholas Bellin the Elder (1703-1772) who was, among other things, the “French Royal Geographer”. This is a map of the Gulf of Benin and part of the coast of Guinea from the Volta River to Cape Formosa. Belling note that he has drawn on the”journaux des Navigateurs”
