HERE IS AN ORIGINAL 1748 LETTER ADDRESSED TO ROBERT DUGARD OF ROUEN, FRANCE SENT BY EX-MISSIONARY TO AMERICA FATHER STEPHEN DOUTRELEAU. DUGARD, A FRENCH MERCHANT, WAS CHIEFLY RESPONSIBLE FOR OPENING TRADE WITH FRANCE TO CANADA AND THE WEST INDIES FROM 1729 - 1770.THE MAN MOST CENTRAL IN THE HISTORY OF THE SOCIETE' du CANADA WAS ROBERT DUGARD, WHOSE FOREBEARS WERE A PART OF THE PROTESTANT COMMUNITY THAT HAD FLOURISHED IN ROUEN BEFORE THE REVOCATION OF THE EDICT OF NANTES.THIS LETTER WAS WRITTEN BY STEPHEN DOUTRELEAU, A FRENCH JESUIT MISSIONARY WHO MINISTERED TO NATIVE AMERICANS AND COLONISTS IN PRESENT-DAY ILLINOIS, MISSISSIPPI AND LOUISIANA FOR 20 YEARS BEFORE RETURNING TO FRANCE IN THE YEAR 1747
