[BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IMPRINT]. Collection of the Works of Thomas Chalkley, In Two Parts. Philadelphia: B. Franklin & D. Hall, 1749. 1st Ed. Extremely rare early American printed book,printed by none other than Benjamin Franklin himself! This is a rare bio and collection of works by Quaker traveler Thomas Chalkley. Part I contains Chalkey's journal, and Part 2, his epistles and other writings. Chalkey was born in London in 1675. He came to America for the first time in 1698 and traveled to Virginia and New England. After returning to England for a while, he again traveled to America where he settled in Philadelphia. He also traveled extensively through Maryland, North Carolina and Rhode Island. His journal describes experiences as a sea captain on voyages in the West Indies. Bound in original early American leather, as shown with light to moderate wear and rounding, similar external wear. Raised bands to the spine. Leaves toned and slightly foxed with a few scattered stains, all bound lest for leaf XI/XII, detached. Nearly complete, the book missing prelaims of Part I [pages I-VI, as well as page XIII], otherwise all present. Title page for part II present. Signed on rear pastedown by James Moffett, else unmarked. Measures 7.25" x 5" x 2.5".
