1783 Spanish piece of 8 or 8 Real from the wreck of the El Cazador Certified and guaranteed genuine by NGC Here is a genuine 8 Real or Piece of 8 minted by Spain at the Mexico City mint. The Spanish milled dollar was the first silver dollar coin used in the United States colonies and was legal tender until 1857. It is the first coin listed in the Red Book or The Official Guidebook of United States Coins. The dollar sign $ was said to be inspired by the two ribbon-wrapped columns. The coin was recovered from the site of the wreck of the El Cazador, a Spanish Brig or warship which sank on September 3, 1783. It was located about 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana at a depth of 300 feet. It is not known wh ether the ship was lost in a storm or possibly was attacked by pirates. This is a wonderful historic piece. The coin shows signs of being in the water for 300 years but still has some detail for a shipwreck coin. The reverse has better detail than the obverse. It has been certified and guaranteed to be genuine and is housed in a new NGC holder. We have another El Cazador coin listed for $139 that has better detail on both sides. If you have any questions, please email us before bidding. Thank you. Our price for this scarce coin is only $49, a great price for an historic coin and genuine Piece of 8. Free postage.
