Signed with the CvS monogram in the top left corner. Published 1648. Top quality, incredible detail. A lovely image. Text in Old Dutch on reverse. Size is 11 x 8 centimetres The print shows the art of wood engraving at its very best, small wonder that Van Sichem was known as "The Dutch Durer". His technique is remarkable in so far as he made no use of cross-hatching, achieving all his incredible effect by vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. The source of the print is the monumental Jesuit print-bible t'Scat der Zielen, dat is: Het geheete leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi..., which was published in Amsterdam in 1648 by Pieter I. Paets, though Sichem engraved many of the illustrations in the 1620's. Van Sichem, who trained under his famous father, based his engravings on compositions by Durer, Aldegrever, Beham, Lucas Van Leyden, the Wierix Brothers, and Goltzius. He was the heir to that marvellous Northern School of "Little Masters".
