The page edges are tipped in gold and after 208 years, are still shining brightly.Other than a name and 1809 date, the book is free from markings.There are 550 pages with 560 hymns; a Subject Index; a Table of Texts of Scriptures; and an Index of Hymns.This small hymnal was someone's inspiration purse size hymn book. Can you imagine having to worship before electric lights and bifocal glasses?There are words and not music staffs because so many of the worshipping places had no musical instruments. The hymns are uniquely noted with the meter number. This indication reminded people that many of our greatly loved hymns can be sung to other familiar tunes.For example "O For A Thousand Tongues" is a Common Meter song.
