This is an original letter signed by Albert Gallatin as Secretary of the Treasury during the administration of President James Madison. Gallatin was the fourth Secretary of the Treasury and served during the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and Madison (1801 - 1814). Gallatin served on the American commission that agreed to the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. In this letter, written to William Ellery, Gallatin is responding to Ellery's letter and appointing John P. Whitford as Keeper of the Light House at Point Judith, in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The docketing on the reverse of the document is in the hand of William Ellery. Please see my other items for another Treasury Dept. letter to Ellery. Thank you.
