[ Father of CSA General Kemper ] Offered here is a 1p. MDS, dated May 24, 1823, 8" x 12 3/4", wherein Proctor B. Rowe and Mildred his wife in the County of Madison in the State of Virginia, sell to William Kemper [the father of Confederate General James L. Kemper] "... a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being on the thoroughfare mountain...," signed Proctor B. Rowe and Mildred Rowe, and on the verso by Belfield Cave. Folds (small breaks), a number of small holes, stained-- overall fairly good.
