1877 James L Kemper Virginia Governor & Ex Civil War Confederate General Letter Description: Letter from the Governor's Office, Commonwealth of Virginia, Richmond. The letter is signed by James L Kemper who was the Virginia Governor from 1874 - 1878. He was also a Confederate General during the Civil War. James Lawson Kemper was born at Mountain Prospect plantation in Madison County, Virginia, on June 11, 1823. Before the civil war Kemper was a brigadier general in the Provisional Army of Virginia. At the start of the civil war he was a colonel in the 7th Virginia Infantry. At First Bull Run, Kemper led the regiment as part of Jubal Early's brigade. After the Battle of Seven Pines Kemper was promoted to brigadier general on June 3, 1862. In 1863, Kemper was assigned to Pickett's Division in Longstreet's Corps for the Gettysburg Campaign. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Kemper was wounded by a bullet in the abdomen and thigh and captured by Union troops. He was exchanged on September 19, 1863. He was too ill for combat but was promoted to major general on September 19, 1864. After the war he worked as a lawyer and served as the first Governor of Virginia after Reconstruction from January 1, 1874, to January 1, 1878.
