This auction is for a large, oval Japanese 100 mon coin with square center hole; we are not coin collectors but do have a small stash of tokens and coins that have accumulated over the years, mostly included with other purchases at flea markets, yard sales, auction and estate sales; see our current and upcoming listings for more of these scattered oddities, time to clear them out, please feel free to ask questions if we miss information in the descriptions! Relied on internet sources to provide information on this piece; it was issued during Japan's Tempo era in 1835 and was produced until about 1870; the raised inscription on the front of the coin reads "Tem po tsu ho" (Tempo referring to the era, tsuho loosely translated as circulating treasure/coin); the reverse inscription reads "to hyaku" (worth - 100, this coin was worth 100 of the standard Japanese coins known as "mon"); o n the face of the outer edge on the two sides of the coin there is a stamp mark of a cherry blossom. The coin is in overall very good condition with age appropriate patina and wear; the reverse side has a green substance which for lack of a better term, appears to be crayon marking from a child? Doesn't have the full appearance of age related "greening" so no real insight of what it is, have not tried to clean it. A cool old piece!! PLEASE CONTACT US PRIOR read more
