We're pleased to offer for auction this wonderful Primitive circa 1840 Dough Box on Stand in Blue Paint! This dough box was very well made. It has tapered sides which are beautifully dovetailed front and back. This is on a stand which has tapered, splayed legs. The apron is mortised into the legs. This is square nailed and has wooden pegs. This dough box has its original lid which has amazing Patina. It is battened at each end to help prevent warping. These battens were well made, beautifully shaped. There was old blue gray paint on the dough box; more of the blue paint was added, aged, oxidized to give an authentic appearance as when more of the original remained. The lid was never painted and its original surface is beautiful with wonderful Patina. Dough boxes such as the one being offered here were made to be used several ways. Rising bread dough was stored inside, then kneaded on the top, which was also used as a general work surface. These dough boxes were sometimes called a riser, referring to the bread dough rising inside. From Pennsylvania, this dough box's lid measures 42" long x 22" wide. The bottom measures 36" long x 28" tall x 17 1.2" wide. Please look at all the pictures for an idea of how wonderful this primitive is!
