Here is a very interesting Ledger and Account Book that I have had for awhile. It apparently belonged to John Cleaves, of Rockport Mass. I had a difficult time determining whether this was from Maine or Massachusetts, because the coastal towns in both states were 'lousy' with people named Cleaves in the 19th century and lots of these folks were involved in one way or another with maritime businesses, but a record in the Peabody Essex Museum seemed to clarify it:I Account book for John Cleaves, 1831-1841 from Rockport, MA. Cleaves was a ship captain who sailed the sloops Eagle, Billow, Express, Pigeon Hill, and Dellawere to ports mainly in Massachusetts. Shipped freight for John Choate in Essex and John Weeks in Rockport. Records of provisions and repair work. Also included is a detailed ship chandler's bill for the sloop Pigeon Hill. One 6.5" X 16" account book plus one loose page. The book I am offering contains records of individual transactions beginning in January 1842 recorded chronologically through the early 1860s, and several pages that seem to be summaries of his dealings with specific individuals or transactions related to specific boat, most particularly the Sloop Lucy Ann or the Schooner Ranger.
