DESCRIPTION: Coverlet collectors are always looking for early DATED Americana folk art coverlets. This was a wonderful find. FYI: Coverlets were made of linen or wool during the 19th century. Most of the coverlets date from 1800 to the 1880s. The earliest coverlets were created on narrow looms, so to find two woven strips joined together is not uncommon. Many early coverlets were also made on larger size looms, thus no seam or joining. The weave structures of coverlets can include summer and winter, double weave, overshot, and others. JACQUARD coverlets (which this coverlet is) have elaborate patterns, they are usually "one of a kind" creations that were created on special looms with the use of a special attachment. Description: This beautiful coverlet measures 84" long (not including the fringe) x 72" across. It is a fine example of an early PA. coverlet, the bottom corner blocks are signed: Emanuel Ettinger Aaronsburg, Centre County, Pennsylvania 1848 . Coverlet is composed of 4 colors: a red which reminds me of a salmon or persimmon color red, a dark indigo blue, olive green, and ecro or off white. The coverlet is light weight 'in my opinion' and exhibits a very fine weave. The pattern features large elaborate 4 bloom joined flowers with almost a 4 leaf clover motif, beautiful graceful tulips are noted with joined hearts and a stripe effect at the border, please see all the photos. We did a tad of research in the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg, PA. and found that Centre County, PA. was erected in C.1800. This coverlet has a very PA.- German or PA. Dutch ambiance. We were not able to locate another Emanuel Ettinger coverlet on eBay however we were able to locate a coverlet available in an established well known and respected Gallery in CT., we will be happy to direct you to that site VIA email request for a comparison. We are offering our coverlet for far below it's value. Emanuel Ettinger is mentioned in noted books on early coverlets and homespun textiles. CONDITION: Coverlet is 158 years old , t is some scattered loss to the fringe, shown, overall it exhibits even wear. A couple of very light unobtrusive stains are noted, very minor and only mentioned for accuracy. T is one small hole noted at the very top, the size of a dime, also shown. The bottom fringe appears to be hand sewn onto the coverlet and though clearly a period 1800s fringe the green is a tad lighter, also shown. Otherwise in very lovely displayable condition, being sold in as found condition, very gallery worthy. From a smoke free environment and very clean.
