1850's handwritten copy book. Summitville, PA. Dimond.

This is the "copy book" of a child, possibly two children learning their penmanship and other lessons from a teacher or tutor. The handmade book measures approximately 8 x 7 inches, and consists of about 150 pages roughly sewn together. One or more pages reads, "Jesse H. Dimond Copy Book," while another page, or pages, reads, "Harrison Diamond's Copy Book." Some lessons seem more elementary than others, and I'm guessing that these were two brothers, one older than the other. At least one page reads, "Joseph Jefferson Wilson Simonton, Instructor."

Summitville, Pennsylvania is now part of the township of Cresson, in Cambria County, between Johnstown and Altoona.

I believe this is the same Jesse H. Dimond buried at St. Bartholomew Cemetery, Summerhill Township,Cambria County, Pennsylvania, born 1838. He would have been 12 or 13 years old when this book was made.

The rootsweb web site notes: " Catherine Caroline STORM was born 20 DEC 1841 in Loretto, Cambria, Pennsylvania, and died 1927 in Wilmore, Cambria, Pennsylvania. She married Jesse H DIMOND. He was born 1838, and died 1922 in Wilmore, Cambria, Pennsylvania. "

I couldn't find much about the instructor, but I did see this notice: "Other data shows that Jefferson Wilson Simonton was b 22 MAR 1832 in Huntingdon Co PA; that he married 26 JAN 1858 in Allegheny Co PA to Lydia Ellen Hoover." This could be the same person. Other searches led me to a Joseph Simonton of PA who was born in 1848 and served in the Civil War, but he would appear to be too young to be the instructor of the Dimond boys.

I really shouldn't spend so much time learning about these people, but it's so interesting to me!

Thanks for looking.
