Very Rare, original 1856 Pro- John C. Fremont Campaign Pamphlet with a printing of the 1st Republican National Convention Party Platform. The Pamphlet is fully titled "Facts for the People. / Read, and Hand to Your Neighbor!". (1856). This historically important, National Republican Party Publication measures approx. 7âe x 10âe and contains 16 pages. It is among the earliest, post National Republican Convention publications and was issued during the first Presidential Convention that included a Republican Candidate for President. The Pamphlet begins with a printing of the Platform adopted by the Party at their National Convention - against the spread of Slavery to the Territories, for the admission of Kansas as a Free State, for the prohibition in the Territories of "those twin relics of barbarism - Polygamy and Slavery", for a strong National Government, for the improvement of River transportation, for the building of a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean, against the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, etc. Following the Party Platform are various sections promoting the Candidacy of the Republican Ticket of John C. Fremont and William L. Dayton and expounding on the precepts of the newly formed Party. Subtitles of the various sections include "Fremont's Letter of Acceptance", "Buchanan's Slavery Record", "A Tree is Known by Its Fruits" - a detailed analysis of the Kansas Law titled "An Act to Punish Offences Against Slave Property", "Disunionists", "The Proof that the Slave Democracy are a Disunion Party" and "Judge Collamer's Minority Report on the Senate Kansas Bill". The Pamphlet is chock full of strident and heated prose attacking the Democratic Party and its policy of supporting Slavery through Compromise and the extension of the Doctrine of State's Rights. The Republican Party was formed in early 1854 to oppose the Kansas-Nebraska Act. During the midterm elections of 1854-1855, the Republican Party was one of the patchwork of anti-administration parties contesting the election. Overall, the Republicans won only 13 seats in the U.S. House for the 34th Congress. However, the party networked with other disaffected groups and gradually absorbed them. In the elections of 1855, the Republican Party won three governorships. The first Republican National Convention was held in the Musical Fund Hall in Philadelphia PA on 6/17-19/1856. The convention approved an anti-slavery platform, calling for congressional sovereignty of the territories, an end to polygamy in Mormon settlements, and federal assistance for a transcontinental railroad. John C. Fremont was nominated for President over John McLean, and William L. Dayton was nominated for Vice President over Abraham Lincoln. Following the Convention, the Republican Party continued its crusade against Slave Power which they felt was destroying the Republican values that the Union had been founded upon. The Pamphlet offered is an early example of the "no holds barred" attitude that was to permeate the 1856 Campaign Rhetoric. This very rare and very early, Republican Party Presidential Campaign Pamphlet is caption titled and without wrappers as issued. The pamphlet is printed on rather poor quality stock but has survived complete and intact. T are spots of soiling and foxing throughout which are more pronounced on the outer pages. T is edge wear and edge chipping (not affecting the text) and some holed and chipping at the folded spine. The Pamphlet was never bound and is untrimmed.
