The only identification on this circa 1860 German cube puzzle is at the bottom right corner of the hand-colored lithographs used to make the puzzle and the keys, Mainz, bei Jos Scholz , followed by a number. Including the one on the cover of the wood box, all six of the keys are present although they have varying amounts of loss and wear. There are 63 of the 1 11/16 inch square solid wood blocks. The paper-covered wood box (16 3/4 by 13 by 2 1/2 inches) has quite a bit of wear and several repairs, and the cloth hinge has split, as has a replacement. The titles, in German, English and French, are The Saylor Boy, Spring, Evening Prayer, A Pleasant Reward, Harvest, and Good Morning. I have included photographs of two of the puzzles and have looked at each of the blocks. Only a very few have any noticeable paper loss, and none of the blocks have total loss to one side. There is some wear and soiling. The two puzzles I have pictured are typical. Please see the photographs, which can be enlarged and are part of the description .
