This rare 4 page newspaper is filled with anti-slavery rhetoric, articles, and opinions at this critical time in American history during the Civil War. This issue is almost completely devoted to the just announced EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION made by President Abraham Lincoln on Sept 22, 1862 . It does not print the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation itself but does have MANY MANY MANY MANY editorials and lots of commetary from numerous Union and Confederate newspapers (all of the newspapers are named) responding to the EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION just issued by Lincoln. This has a prominent front page headline that reads: "The President's (Emancipation) Proclamation / Growls of the Pro-Slavery Press" with 2 columns of editorials from various pro-slavery newspapers, all commenting on the Emancipation Proclamation in a negative light. This also has a prominent front page headline that reads: "The Proclamation of Freedom / Opinions of the Loyal Press" with 6 columns of editorials from various anti-slavery newspapers, all commenting on the Emancipation Proclamation in a positive light. This is the BEST Civil War newspaper I have ever seen with immediate commentary and discussion of Lincoln's Preliminary EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION in such great detail and in such great quantity of text !! This issue is great for display and "begs to be framed" and hung in a museum as a visualization of the many differing opinions in 1862 regarding the Emancipation of the Slaves !! The Emancipation Proclamation is an executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War under his war powers. It proclaimed the freedom of 3.1 million of the nation's 4 million slaves, and immediately freed 50,000 of them, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced. On September 22, 1862, Lincoln announced that he would issue a formal emancipation of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union control by January 1, 1863. The actual order was signed and issued January 1, 1863; it named the locations under Confederate control where it would apply. Lincoln issued the Executive Order by his authority as " Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy" under Article II, section 2 of the United States Constitution . The National Anti-Slavery Standard was the official weekly newspaper of the American Anti-Slavery Society , established in 1840 under the editorship of Lydia Maria Child and David Lee Child . The paper published continuously until the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1870 . Good-Very good condition.
