Rarely offered white metal 50th anniversary medal commemorating one of the most controversial events of Native American History. The medal and pinback crossbar show evidence of silvering which has worn considerably (see images.) The original ribbon is present but tattered. The ensemble still presents well and remains in nice condition. Medal and suspension measure 4 ½" top to bottom, the crossbar is 2 ½" across, the round medal is 2 ¼" in diameter. This medal was worn by the surviving defenders at the 50th anniversary reunion of the 1862 Sioux uprising* where over 500 Minnesota settlers were killed. The result was the simultaneous hanging of 38 Dakota Indians on December 26, 1862. It was the largest mass execution in US History. The US-Dakota War also was the largest Indian attack on settlers in the history of the US. An important relic from the 50th anniversary of this sad event.*The Dakota War of 1862 was also known as the Sioux Uprising , Dakota Uprising , the Sioux Outbreak of 1862 , the Dakota Conflict , the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862 or Little Crow's War.
