After the Civil War broke out in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to issue it's own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. The gamble was that if the South won the war, the money would be redeemable. The 1st note from the Government of the Confederate States of America was issued in April of 1861. From then on, notes were issued on through 1864. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered. It is not uncommon for these notes to have uneven, or rough borders since scissors or shears were used to hastily cut the sheets of notes apart. These are ORIGINAL CONFEDERATE TEN DOLLAR NOTEs up for auction. They were first issued Feb. 17th 1864 and have the serial numbers 45424 and 54800. They are both in FINE condition with no tears or holes. Both have been hand signed and numbered and have plate letters D and E (1st series and no series). I grade my notes very conservatively so . These notes are a very popular type and a favorite among new collectors. A nice original token from the civil war era. The obverse of this note features a BEAUTIFUL scene of horses pulling a cannon and soldiers fighting in the background. The reverse features the denomination with a beautiful blue webbed design.
