Two (apparently related) items that came together years ago when I purchased them in a small shop in New England: 1. a book by the 'Masonic Burial Office,' dated AL 5864 ( 1864 ). It was to be used by Masonic lodges under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island for proper burial ritual for deceased brethren . It was published in Providence by Sidney Rider & Bros. 45 pages. Leather covers are sound, but spine is flaking. 2. a coffin identity plate . Silver metal, 18x10 cm. It has engraved the Pillars and Globes, the All-Seeing Eye with rays, and an altar with jewels and the open Bible. It is further engraved, "Thos R. Davis, Born December 13th, 1833, Died March 21st, 1889." A wonderful acquisition or gift for a student of the Civil War era, of Freemasonry in New England, or of American fraternal organizations. Returns accepted if materially incorrect description, and if returned in same condition.
