This is a significant piece of historical ephemera from a few different areas: The popular President Abraham Lincoln , Victorian era mourning customs, Massachusetts & Boston memoribilia, US Civil War, political and even religious meaning. It is a large framed broadside poster measuring 21 1/4" x 28 3/4". "By his excellency John A. Andrew, Governor" who had won the Massachusetts governorship by the largest majority to date. In 1861, Andrew had sent Massachusetts' troops to the Washington DC Capitol as defense w they became the first to fight in the Civil War. Later, in 1863, Andrew petitioned President Lincoln to compel the army to accept Massachusetts' 54th Regiment, which would be formed entirely of black troops under leadership of volunteer white officers. The broadside calls for a "day of special humiliation and prayer"; "in recognition of the recent bereavement of the nation and of the people by the lamented death of President Abraham Lincoln". Given at the Council Chamber, in Boston, May 5, 1865; and the "eighty-ninth year of Independence of the United States of America". The frame is a simple modern, 1.5" wide, rusticated, pickled finish.
