In our opinion, this coin would be graded MS63This coin is Guaranteed to be Authentic!THE COIN PICTURED IS THE ACTUAL COIN YOU ARE BIDDING ON AND WILL RECEIVE!1879-O1879 marked the first year of Morgan dollar production at the mint in New Orleans. As many collectors and investors are aware, the New Orleans facility had its problems during the life of the Morgan dollar in producing pieces of high quality. The 1879-O date is one of the exceptions in that it was struck with higher quality and more details than most of the subsequent New Orleans issues. Some experts feel that the strike was adequate although there are plenty of examples displaying a flatness in the center of the coin on both sides. Bagmarks tend to run from average to heavy, although most are not the deep gouge or nick variety. Rather the coins look as if they have been lightly scuffed up. The luster is generally good except for the scuffs.A large number of mint bags of 1879-O and ten other O-mint dollars were released by the Treasury during the run on the Treasury in late 1963 and early 1964. The unfortunate purchasers discovered that the majority of coins in each bag had been lightly circulated, and were, in fact, AU-50 and AU-55 coins. The probable reason for the light circulation is that dollars are heavy and bulky and have always had a tendency to drain back into banks after a short period of circulation. These coins were not popular in the 19th century, except in the western states.At the present, dealers feel that no more than 10% of the 1879-O Morgan dollars seen on the market are in mint condition. A great number of lightly circulated pieces exist, and some unscrupulous persons may have not qualms about trying to convince buyers to acquire these as Mint State coins. Beware!A reasonable quantity of prooflike pieces exists. About half of these are cameos with good field/device contrast and half are brilliant PLs with little contrast. Many pieces exist with the light scuffmarks mentioned above.(Information contained above is from James B. Osbon's "Silver Dollar Encyclopedia 2nd Edition")Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everywhere. Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon.
