This very rare 1886 illustratedfamily Bible is a stunning piece of history, and it includes numerous full pageGustave Dore engravings, chromolithograph colored engravings, and colored maps. Published in 1886 by Historical Publishing Co, Philadelphia. PA. The Bible has a rich dark mahogany colored engraved leather cover. It is intricately engraved with 22kt gold gilding on the spine, front and back covers with gilt lettering and biblical scenes including the last supper & Solomon’s Temple. Gustav Gore Illustrations: Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (1832-1883) was a famous French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor, although he was best known for his wood engravings. Perhaps the most well known Biblical illustrator in history, he made hundreds of etchings of biblical scenes that were used to illustrate this Bibles in the 19 th century. This Bible contains black and white lithographs of Gustave Dore wood engravings, as well as other chromolithograph colored illustrations..
