TRADE MARK (lion and wierd symbol) MAGNUS CINCINNATI,OHIO (vertical on front panel).....hand blown...hand tooled cork top finish with crooked neck....beautiful amethyst color.....square....fancy fluted shoulder....10"tall x 3 5/8"square.....EXCELLENT NEAR MINT CONDITION with no chips, cracks or damage. Sparkling clean. The neck leans to one side. The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Most of the manganese used in glass factories came from Germany, so when WW1 broke out in 1914, it became much harder to obtain manganese. Other oxide decolorizers were then used instead, so most bottles made after 1918 or so don't turn amethyst. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst.
