As we continue traveling in Italy searching for special treasures to bring to you on Ebay, we are always looking for one of our favorite treasures - the Italian Hand Painted Ex-Voto. We view them as one of the most beautiful and fascinating of the Italian Religious Art Forms. As we travel and collect these painted ex-votos we are always captivated by the different artistic styles which originate from the different regions of Italy. This week we are very pleased to present four distinctive Painted Ex-votos for you. Please check our other Auctions. IN THIS AUCTION we are offering a Remarkable Italian Painted Ex-voto from 1890 of a Family Praying to the Madonna and Her Sacred Heart. Over the years we have become fascinated with the folk-art tradition of devotional painting. in Italy t is a long history of painted ex-votos. The paintings are made after the successful intervention of The Madonna or a Saint. In this painting, we find a classic setting - with a twist! In the center of the painting a man has fallen to his knees as his wife stands behind him. They have clasped their hands in prayer and are looking at an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary... but t is another figure evident in this apparition! A woman dressed all in black is standing next to the Madonna. Who is she? Could she be the prayerful couple's daughter? or Sister? And what could her predicament be? After all these years, the painting still provokes thought and wonder at what event occurred in these people's lives. The inscription on the painting reads "Grazia Ricevuta" which translates into "Thanks for Graces Received". The quality of the painting is quite remarkable. The rudimentary brush strokes convey a great sense of poignancy in this deeply felt painting. The somber palette is broken by the wonderful draped curtains above the praying couple and the soft yellow cloud burst that contains the Madonna in Her muted orange gown and Her red Sacred Heart. The wood framed painting is 13 ¾ inches (35 cm) wide by 9 ½ inches (24.5 cm) tall. The painted wood frame has several nicks and scratches. Please note that t are two small holes in the painting. They are probably the remnants of the screws that were used to attach it to the wall. One of the holes is located at the edge of the cloud and the other is in the red curtain. It should also be noted that t is a crack in the wood in the bottom right corner. If you turn the painting over, you can observe that this crack is the result of a knot in the wood and probably occurred over the years as the wood dried. T are small surface blemishes on the painting, but none that could be considered serious. This painting will be a mysterious addition to any serious collection of painted Ex-Votos and will certainly grace any setting.
