1890S SLEEPY HOLLOW RIP VAN WINKLE SKETCHES TAUCHNITZ Description: Offered is a wonderful copy of the classic Sketch Book, by Washington Irving, authorized edition, with the Portrait of the Author. Containing the famous Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the equally famous Rip Van Winkle.You will note that the title page is dated 1843. Despite this, we don't think this is from that date, more like 1890 or so. Tauchnitz kept the original pub. date on his books, don't ask us why. Published by Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, Germany, but in English, as were all Tauchnitz editions. They were published for English speaking travellers in Europe.Beautifully bound in bright red decorated cloth, 446 pages, 6x4 and a half inches. Great condition. With a neat little bookstore label, C. Troemer's University Bookstore in Freiburg, Germany, and a signature, Jacob Hirsch, Freiburg, 1895. The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by Washington Irving. Published serially throughout 1819 and 1820, and was published in one volume in 1894 by Altemus' Bookbindery. The collection includes two of Diedrich Knickerbocker's works, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."
