1893 San Francisco Denham School US Mint Silver Medal. "Denham Grammar School Medal 1865/Awarded to: Alice Neineman 1893". Issued by the US Mint in San Francisco for the Denham Grammar School. William E. Goldsmith, sculptor. Goldsmith was born in Massachusetts and lived in Boston until 1852 when he moved to San Francisco. He was paid $125 to prepare the dies. The Denman medal was the first school medal issued on the west coast. R.W. Swain, the superintendent of the San Francisco US branch mint agreed to strike the medals as there was no other facility in San Francisco that was capable of executing the medals. The school was located at the corner of Bush & Taylor streets and was built in 1864. The school was first established in 1851 with James Denman the first teacher and principal until 1857. In 1865 Denman donated $1000 to the school to establish a medal to be given to the school's most dedicated pupils. The San Francisco Mint issued the medal from 1874 until the early 1890s. The medal is cataloged as Julian SC-50 and contains 18 grams of silver. 34 mm. Condition: nicely toned XF with luster not visible in the images.
