Description: This listing is for a Walnut George III English Chippendale 18th Century Tilt Top Pie Crust Table. The pie crust top is associated with the base, appearing to be of the same period but of two different sources. It is a beautiful single board pie crust top, which is pretty amazing considering the sheer size of the table top. The edging around the table is entirely carved of the same board making up the top - there is not a single applied carving on this piece. It is highlighted by tiny wooden pegs that at one point secured the rails along the bottom of the table. The rails were replaced, probably in the late 19th/early 20th century, with screws securing the rails rather than the wooden pegs. The underside of the table top has period hardware, if not original to the top, that has been moved and elevated to allow the associated pieces to work smoothly together. The pedestal mortises through the base, making the two pieces one solid unit - there is an absolutely stunning patina and warping to the base that adds visually. The entire base is hand carved and left mostly unfinished, allowing the craftsman to be productive in his work and now giving us a very raw and beautiful patina on unplaned surfaces.
