Rare 1904 St. Louis World's Fair souvenir, 5" x 3 ½", and 4 ¼" tall, the base applied with a screw, washer, and nut. Delicate-looking but fairly substantial, it is a graceful and complicated shell carving incorporating a bird, fluted, scalloped bowl, and little nest-like element with a serrated edge on the back rim. All over, but particularly in the bowl, there is a glossy iridescence that accentuates the natural waviness in the shell. I don't know whether it had a particular function beyond being an unusual whimsy made by a carver who took advantage of the contours of the shell. In black handwriting on the tall projection at the back, "World's Fair / St. Louis , 1904." NOTE: there is a spot, low on the back, where the shell surface is a little eroded. It's natural and original. Rare, beautiful old souvenir in excellent condition; no cracks, scratches, chips, stains, or repair. An item may be returned if it is substantially different from how I have described it.
