The Life of James McNeill Whistler In Two Volumes by J[oseph] & E[lizabeth] R[obins] Pennell Published by William Heinemann, London,1908. First edition; second impression. xxvi + 316 & xiv + 327 pages, with 2 gravure frontis portraits with captioned tissueguards & over 150 illustrations on 132 plates, 5 text illustrations,appendix, index. In the original quarter mustard yellow cloth backedpaper over boards, gilt titles on upper cover & stamped in black on the spines, some slight wear on the boards/edges. A biography of the American artist by his friends. Fellow-artist Joseph Pennell first met Whistler in 1884 and the second volume is based heavily on his personal knowledge of his friend. An interesting association copy with both volumes containing the bookplates of Robert Furneaux Jordan (1905 – 1978), the English architect, architectural critic, and novelist. Condition: Very good. NB blemish in photos is on my camera lens only.
