Created by Victor David Brenner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. This coin features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the front and two “ears” of wheat on the back. Although the coin was an immediate success, complaints were raised about the presence of Brenner’s initials (V.D.B.) on the back of the coin. As a result, new dies were made without the initials, creating two varieties for this year. Although Brenner’s initials re-appeared in 1918 (hidden at the base of Lincoln’s shoulder on the obverse), their prominence on the 1909 VDB Cent makes this an extremely popular variety.Mintage: 1909 VDB - 27,995,000compared to 1909 without VDB - 72,702,618Designer: Victor David BrennerDiameter: 19 millimetersMetal content:Copper - 95%Tin and Zinc - 5%Weight: 48 grains (3.11 grams)Edge: PlainMintmark: read more
