Welcome to BOOKCOOK's fine and rare bookstore.Please take a moment to browse around and enjoy the book featured here that was specially selected for you.This auction is for an amazing handwritten recipe book from California, it is not dated but c. 1910. It includes many recipes using ingredients such as lemons, oranges, bananas, pineapple and pecans that cannot survive colder regions. There are recipes such as French Dressing made with orange blossom honey, Orange Marmalade made with Sunkist oranges, and Pineapple Custard Pie. Sunkist was branded in 1908 in California and was an immediate success with consumers. Everyone wanted only the best oranges and lemons which is why you will see several recipes specifically requiring only Sunkist fruit. There are also recipes using Pacific Ocean ingredients like Fresh Halibut Steaks and Clam Chowder. All of these recipes are light and fresh; Sunshine Cake is just one example. The owner's name in written on the inside of the back cover, "Mrs. Carrie J. Shore." Mrs. Shore even included a separate recipe for Pine Apple Cake that is handwritten on stationary from The Pocahontas Hotel, Virginia Beach, Virginia, quite a distant trip for those days.Remember that 100 years ago there were no imported fruits or vegetables, so these recipes are really authentic to the region.
