1911-S Barber Quarter. An unusual looking coin thatrequires some explanation. It has AU details overall, but the Obverse is impaired. It shows signs of having been cleaned as well as a few light marks, but otherwise the detail is crisp and sharp with full star radials, etc. The Reverse however is a totally original AU-58, with complete bold “cartwheel” luster, very slight wear to the highest surfaces and a light mark or two. My guess is that this was either stored improperly and toned very darkly on the Obverse, which led a non-collector to abuse it a bit, or the more likely that it was recovered either from the ground or another situation where it toned darkly on one side. The marks tend to support this theory, however the disparity between the Obverse and Reverse also lend themselves to another possibility: that it was found in a house under a door lintel or window frame, either having wound up there by chance, or after having been placed there for good luck (an old practice of carpenters that came out of the maritime tradition in the 18 th Century.) A decidedly tougher date with a mintage under 1 million. Lawrence rated it an R-4 in Fine to EF, and an R-5 in AU, which matches my experience. It has its problems, but given the scarcity of this issue in better grades, it should still be worthy of a reasonable bid. My Opening Bid read more
