The first years (1918-1920) of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia finally provided the tiny European "Center of Art" country its rightful place on the world map, and in doing so unveiled to the world a treasure which had been for over 500 years credited to another empire or conqueror. The most renowned art was that which revealed one the country's most precious natural wonders ... that of exquisite handblown, edged glass and the natural gems and minerals which had been for centuries gracing the crowns of kings, the ornate windows of gothic cathedrals, the chandeliers of castles and the necks, the wrists, and the fingers of the nobility. For the first time in the 2000 year history of the Bohemian and Moravian regions, the Czech culture was now the caretaker of her own resources, skills, land and government.
