The first years (1918-1920) of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia finally provided the tiny European "Center of Art" country its rightful place on the world map, and in doing so unveiled to the world a treasure which had been for over 500 years credited to another empire or conqueror. The most renowned art was that which revealed one the country's most precious natural wonders ... that of exquisite handblown, edged glass and the natural gems and minerals which had been for centuries gracing the crowns of kings, the ornate windows of gothic cathedrals, the chandeliers of castles and the necks, the wrists, and the fingers of the nobility. For the first time in the 2000 year history of the Bohemian and Moravian regions, the Czech culture was now the caretaker of her own resources, skills, land and government. An exuberant pride pronounced itself in one of the most noticeable forms ... that of ornate decor ... which was world renowned in the form of jewelry ~ both of fine and costume. And because of the pride and skill in workmanship, the rare materials, and the creative designs, these two categories were often difficult to distinguish. The item in presented is an example of the "fine" ~ created in Czechoslovakia c. 1919 and in the possession of one Prague family since. The exquisite Art Nouveau design, defined in tiered and veined arched leaves and intricate flower petals, sumptuously accents the cut away hand tooled pattern of lace-like scallops, sashes, raised ball and ribbed detail, and the fleur de lis at center's top and bottom sections. Further enhancing the brilliance of the 14K gold double overlay are the brilliant facets of the tiny channel-set rhinestones which nestle within the layers flowers at 3 and 9 o'clock. Collectively, the intricacies of this miniature "garden" were created with one reason in mind ... to allow the eye to be attracted to the main focus ~ that of the emerald cut, octogan shaped aqua crystal. Bezel set and further secured with soft edged claws, the crystal's facets expose a remarkable dazzle and a high refraction level with hues altering from soft blue to dark aquamarine touched with gold rays ~ resembling an aged window pane. Within the pendant's 2" width and 1" width all detail is in perfect ratio and proportion. Brilliantly breathtaking would weakly describe its satin-like glow. Expert craftsmanship and attention to detail of this early 1900's pendant are realized in the fine soldering of each link of 21" book-linked chain and its tapered oval hallmarked clamped edges as well as the solder detail at edges of chain w it meets the top edges of brooch. Item is SOLID weighing 9 grams. and is of 925 (sterling) silver with a double overlay of 14K. Full measure is 2" horizontal, 1" vertically 1/8" in depth of edges and 3/8" in depth at center. Dazzling with black; classically refreshing with white. From the country which placed such items of unique brilliance and perfected beauty on the map ... and never looked back.
