1929 Thomas Edison glass plaque, commissioned by Henry Ford to Frederick Carder Steuben in excellent original condition. Glass has a few very minor surface scuffs that are barely noticeable and typical for its age. Since these plaques were hand-made, this has a handful of small imperfections embedded in the glass itself. The 1929 Steuben acid mark is clearly visible on the base of this glass. Glass measures 8-5/8" x 6-5/8". On October 21, 1919, the 50th anniversary of Edison's incandescent light bulb, President Herbert Hoover dedicated the opening of the Edison Institute (Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, and Greenfield Village Schools) in Dearborn, MI. Of the 260 dignitaries in attendance, including Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, some of the more notable were Marie Curie, George Eastman, John D. Rockefeller, Will Rogers, and Orville Wright. The dedication was broadcast on radio with listeners encouraged to turn off their electric lights until the switch was flipped at the museum. Henry Ford personally commissioned Frederick Carder Steuben to hand-produce a series of glass luminaries of Edison's portrait to be given as gifts to the attendees of his gala banquet.
