Burke's Landed Gentry (original title "Burke's Commoners") is the result of nearly two centuries of intense work by the Burke family, and others since, in building a collection of books of genealogical and heraldic interest, which has evolved with Burke's Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage. The Burke's Landed Gentry, as a detailed listing of key families or other influential figures in the United Kingdom, was first published in 1826, as developed by Sir John Bernard Burke. Burke's Landed Gentry is widely used by historians and genealogical researchers. Bernard Burke, creator of the "Landed Gentry" (book series), was also a talented writer. Bernard had a flair for flowery phraseology which appealed to some on the "Gothick phantasy" side of the Victorian character. Bernard Burke was a prodigiously hard worker whose volume of output allowed little time for the meticulous checking of modern genealogy. Bernard's typical account of the antiquity of any family was that an ancestor "came in with the Conqueror". In English history, landed gentry were the smaller landowners, and generally had no titles apart from Knighthoods and Baronetcies. Baronets are something of an exception, since they had hereditary titles but, not being members of the Peerage, were also considered of the gentry or lesser nobility. The landed gentry played an important role in the English Civil War of the seventeenth century. The term is still occasionally employed by the publishers of Burke's Landed Gentry.Sir (John) Bernard Burke (1814–1892), genealogist and herald. As early as 1838 Burke's name was joined with his father's as author of A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies of England. Subsequent collaborations were the second (1840) and third (1846) editions of A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerages of England, Ireland and Scotland, Extinct, Dormant and in Abeyance; The Knightage of Great Britain and Ireland (1841); the first three editions of A General Armory of England, Scotland and Ireland (1842, 1843, 1844); Heraldic Illustrations (3 vols., 1844–6); the ninth (1847) and tenth (1848) editions of A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage; the three-volume second edition (1843–9) of A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland; and the two-volume (1847 and 1851) Royal Families of England, Scotland and Wales with their Descendants, Sovereigns and Subjects. After his father's death in 1848 he continued to edit the principal genealogical works. The Peerage and Baronetage, which became an annual publication in 1847, was in its fifty-fourth edition at the time of Burke's own death in 1892, and he produced a further five editions of the Landed Gentry after 1849. DNB CONDITION In a decorative cloth binding. Externally worn and faded with marks. The rear joint is starting, the front hinge strained. Internally, generally firmly bound, slightly strained in places. Lovely and bright and generally clean with some marks to the first and last few pages.
