Up for auction a Very Nice 1939-1940 HEDDON NO.400 "CHIEFTAIN" 5-1/2 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CLOTH BAG. One of James Heddon's Sons longest-running models, first introduced in 1913 and known simply as "The No.4 Rod". It would be renamed the "Chieftain" in 1928, redesignated the No.400 in 1933 and would sell through the 1952 season. Because this example carries the Neo Classic Era rodshaft markings (first used in 1939) and is equipped with agate guides (last offered as an option in 1940), we know it was only built from 1939 to 1940. Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "Heddon" diagonally along three flats and "#400 - 5-1/2' - 2F" along one other. The reel seat is correctly stamped with the simple "PAT." marking. I've added a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1939 catalog. Rod is built with beautiful browntone Tonkin cane and comes equipped with full genuine orange agate guides & tip top, high-grade ferrules, screw-locking "Hold-Tite" reel seat with attached trigger, solid cork tournament grip & foregrip and wound in maroon silk with orange & green trim. Rod is in solid Very Fine condition, showing only light overall wear. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length, with the butt section having a very mild set. Varnish looks new and is read more
