1939 P-D-S Arkansas Commemorative Half Dollars ORIGINAL MATCHED SET, NGC MS 65 Plus 1937 P-D-S Texas Commemorative Half Dollars Matched SET, PCGS MS 66 CAC This lot consists of two P-D-S sets of coins (6 coins total, 1939 P-D-S Arkansas NGC MS 65 and 1937 P-D-S Texas PCGS MS 66 CAC) ARKANSAS This half dollar was minted to celebrate the centennial of Arkansas statehood. Similar to issues such as the Boone and Oregon Trail half dollars, the Arkansas halves were minted for several years (1935-1939). The original demand was low, with sales crowded out my the huge number of other commemorative issues of the mid-1930s. As such, every coin has a mintage below 10,000. These 1939 coins are the rarest in the series, with mintages of only 2100 coins from each mint! This listing is for an ORIGINAL MATCHED SET of 1939 Arkansas commemorative half dollars. This includes three coins, one each from the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints.It is extremely unusual these days to find an original matched set of these halves. In fact, one prominent numismatist recently estimated on her website that less than 100 original sets are still together in 2011. This is out of mintages of only 2100 coins per mint!!
