Rare 1939 Tasha Tudor~Alexander the Gander~VG 1st Ed Description: Alexander the Gander by Tasha Tudor Oxford Univ. Press (1939). First Edition ~ rare Small 4" x 4 3/4" hardcover book, sized perfectly for small hands: green polka-dotted cloth, illustrated endpapers; unpaginated (46 pages). no dust jacket. First edition of Tudor's second book after Pumpkin Moonshine. Full page color illustrations by Tasha Tudor facing each page of text as well as pictorial endpapers and title page. T was a real Alexander the Gander on Tudor's farm who served as the inspiration for this book about a mischievous goose. Tasha Tudor's first books are known as Calico Books because the first title (Pumpkin Moonshine, 1938) that she took around to publishers hoping to get published was hand-bound in calico. Eunice Blake at Oxford University Press was the one who finally saw the merit in her work; the publisher liked it so much that they did the first five books in a calico-looking binding and a nickname was born. Condition: The covers are lightly soiled and rubbed at all edges and corners. The child owners's name is written at the top of the blank endpaper facing the title page. The front hinge is cracked but holding along its entire length. The first text page has light green mark from pencil or maybe crayon, and some of the text pages have thumb read more
