Up for auction is this rare and unique yardage celebrating the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Playful Art Deco renderings of the fair buildings are scattered over the fabric in orange, yellow, green and light blue on a deep blue background. The fabric has been made into a dress- the bodice of the dress has some tears, but the skirt is in relatively good condition with 3 panels: 2 trapezoid shaped front panels, measuring approximately 35 inches from hem to waist, each 18 inches wide at the hem and approximately 9 inches wide at the waist. The 3 rd panel is the back of the skirt (no center back seem, so the back panel is large) measuring approximately 35 inches from hem to waist, approximately 35 inches wide at the hem, and approximately 25 inches wide at the waist. The cotton is heavy and sturdy, though in “as is” used condition, softly faded as seen in the photographs. The tears in the bodice make it unlikely to be restored into a dress, but the skirt yardage is strong, and I think there are endless possibilities for this yardage- pillows, décor, art, etc. Coming to you from a non-smoking household. ***NEW INFO added Nov 29th. I have been asked to add a photo of the dress so that bidders can see the style. I have also added a photo of one of the tears (this one is the one at the shoulder- also note the right sleeve is torn from the armseye- also, the skirt is partially torn from the bodice- BUT to the best of my vision, all of the tears are on seams and NOT in the fabric itself, thus in skilled hands, it could be repaired). Most importantly, the last photo added shows some staining that I found running through the middle of the right front skirt panel from buttonhole at the center to middle of the panel at the height of the knee. This staining is darkest at the buttonhole, and faint mid-panel (in the last photo, look at the word Transportation- the staining can be seen around the T and the A- also, faint staining above that word on the banners and flags seen at the upper left corner near the letters NYC. The worst of the staining is seen to the right of the photo on the image of the Perisphere and under. PLEASE take this into account if you bid. Thanks for looking!
